3 projects to help the South easily connect the center of Ho Chi Minh City

In order to solve the congestion situation, help vehicles go from the South area to the city center more easily, in addition to upgrading and expanding the implemented Kenh Te and Y bridges, in the coming time, Ho Chi Minh City will accelerate traffic projects in the South area, focusing on 3 major projects: Nguyen Khoai bridge,  Thu Thiem 4 and Nguyen Van Linh - Nguyen Huu Tho tunnel.

The Nguyen Khoai bridge project initially had a total investment of VND 1,250 billion, connecting District 7 through District 4, but so far has not been implemented. The reason for the delay in implementation In addition to the lack of funds, the People's Committee of District 4 is concerned that the project creates a new congestion point, in the context that this area is always seriously congested, so it proposed to adjust the plan accordingly.

In the new plan, the project will build an overpass throughout the route from D1 road, District 7 (Him Lam Kenh Te residential project) to District 1 and have a branch to District 4. Vehicles from District 7 to District 1 (and vice versa) by viaduct on Nguyen Khoai street, Kenh Te flyover and Ben Nghe canal overpass, connecting Vo Van Kiet street. As a result, the project reduces congestion for internal roads in District 4, sharing traffic pressure with roads from the South to the city center such as Khanh Hoi - Kenh Te - Nguyen Huu Tho bridge, Nguyen Van Cu bridge - Duong Ba Trac street.

Currently, the project has been adjusted investment policy and is one of 55 key projects proposed by the Department of Transport to the City People's Committee to approve the investment policy in 2021, submitting to the City People's Council for approval the medium-term capital plan 2021-2025. According to the plan, the project will be invested with budget capital with a total capital of more than VND 2,500 billion.

"The project will be implemented as soon as it is approved at the last HCMC People's Council meeting. It is expected that in 2021 the project will be designed, surveyed and prepared for construction in 2022," said Mr. Luong Minh Phuc, Director of the Traffic Works Investment Project Management Board.

The Thu Thiem 4 bridge project connecting districts 7 and 2, nearly 2.2 km long, 28 m wide, 6 lanes after years of stagnation due to capital difficulties, was recently restarted by Ho Chi Minh City when proposed to prepare for investment from 2021, with a total capital of VND 5,300 billion. The starting point of the project is expected from the section before the intersection of Tan Thuan 2 - Nguyen Van Linh bridge, going along Nguyen Van Linh street, turning left at the intersection of Huynh Tan Phat connecting to Luu Trong Lu street (District 7).

The bridge continues to cut through Tan Thuan port area, crossing the Saigon River, connecting to Thu Thiem Urban Area (District 2) at the intersection of the North-South axis and the R4 route. Thu Thiem 4 bridge is completed to help shorten travel time from District 2, Thu Duc, Binh Thanh through districts 7, 8, Nha Be district, Binh Chanh district. The project, in addition to promoting the development of Thu Thiem New Urban Area, also has the role of connecting traffic from the East to the South without vehicles having to run around through the central districts, reducing congestion for existing roads.

Among 3 key projects, the Nguyen Van Linh - Nguyen Huu Tho tunnel project has been implemented since April, with a budget of VND 830 billion in phase one. The project made two tunnels 480 m long with branches and central circular islands above. It is expected that the two tunnels will be completed in 2022, limiting crossings between directions and reducing traffic congestion through this intersection, facilitating vehicles from Nguyen Huu Tho to Kenh Te bridge into the city center more openly.

In the second phase, the project will complete the intersection with two flyovers and two tunnels with a cost of about VND 1,780 billion (VND 780 billion for construction, the rest is site clearance). The entire project is expected to solve the frequent traffic jams that occur at the southern gateway of the city.
